A Taste of Mexico on BroadwayInes Saldana Mama Mexico Food is everything to me. At times it provides the same warm embrace that family does. I seek food to comfort me when I am depressed, to help me celebrate when I am joyous, to give me substance and to simply pass time. The food closest to my heart is Mexican food; the food of my mother. In my heart she is the only one who can master the art of traditional Mexican cooking, sans the melted cheese and refried beans that are prevalent in the Mexican restaurants of New York city. Recently I went out to dinner with a group of friends who were in New York from out of town. As they had been away from New York for some time the decision of where to dine somehow fell on my shoulders once again. I wanted something lively, something close to the upper west side for my own convenience, and I wanted something relatively inexpensive. I decided on Mama Mexico. Mama Mexico is a family owned establishment located on 102nd street and Broadway (they have another located on midtown east-though this is not as lively), on the upper west side of Manhattan. The location itself seems to have grown haphazardly protruding onto Broadway with the restaurant’s popularity. The inside décor displays numerous tables arranged close together and the service is not one that you’d find at a three star establishment, but more like a fast food restaurant. Although the menu extends on several pages, it seems the dishes are repeated over and over again. The mood is quite energetic ,however, and the atmosphere is not unlike spring break in Cancun, especially when the restaurant manager comes around pouring tequila shots into diners mouths. One can also enjoy the powerful margaritas and the flavorful table side guacamole.
